AMU suspends 12 more students for violence
Aligarh, Nov 6 (IANS) The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has suspended 12 more students for delivering inflammatory speeches, disrupting the academic atmosphere and manhandling varsity officials during their protests against the murder of a student, an official said Friday.
With this suspension ordered Thursday evening, a total of 18 students have been placed under suspension for their violent agitation last week over the killing of a final year B.Sc student Shahnawaz Alam who was shot dead Oct 25.
‘Taking disciplinary action against the students, the varsity administration has also prohibited their entry in the university,’ AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar told reporters here.
According to officials, during their series of protests against the murder of Shahnawaz Alam, the 12 students had also indulged in vandalism, disrupted the busy Delhi-Kolkata rail route for hours and targeted public properties in Aligarh, a city in Uttar Pradesh some 300 km from state capital Lucknow.
Thirteen students of AMU have already been booked for alleged rioting, manhandling government officials and damaging public property, according to police.
AMU was temporarily shut down Friday following protests by students.
