Charlize Theron to bring Hollywood glitz to South Africa’s World Cup draw
Cape Town, Nov. 29 (ANI): Charlize Theron, South Africa’s most glamorous export, is being flown home to bring much-needed Hollywood glitz to the troubled preparations for the 2010 World Cup. ccording to The Telegraph, Theron will take up a daunting speaking role in front of a worldwide television audience expected to reach 200 million.
The Oscar-winning actress heads an A-list of celebrities, including David Beckham, who are flying in to Cape Town to showcase the important draw on Friday that will determine the cup’s group stage.
But while England fans will be watching closely and hoping to avoid tournament heavyweights like Holland or Portugal in any “group of death”, the draw promises to offer a welcome distraction for the tournament’s organisers.
And for the country of her birth the draw will be an iconic moment in a football odyssey which has seen it competing internationally, banned, reinstated and now hosting the greatest sporting tournament on earth.
That its national side, known as Bafana Bafana, has only won one match in the last six months and is the lowest-ranked team – currently 86th in the FIFA table – ever to host the event, may partly explain why 2010 organisers are struggling to whip up much local enthusiasm.
2010 organisers are anxious to avoid the risible gates at the Confederations Cup held in South Africa last June when only half of the available tickets were sold.
So the South African government is resorting to increasingly imaginative ways of overcoming the current public apathy. (ANI)
