Collapse of pact jeopardizes Zardari’s Presidential tenure

Lahore, Nov 26(ANI): The collapse of a pact granting immunity from corruption charges to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has abruptly weakened his chances of becoming the first civilian leader in country’s 62-year history to finish a term in office.

However, Zardari fired back at his critics at a political rally in Karachi, marking the 42nd anniversary of his Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and said: “To those who are trying to bring down this government, I will say that all your efforts will be in vain.”

The National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), which was signed in October 2007 by then- Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto, Zardari’s wife, has turned out to be a nightmare in disguise when Zardari asked the Parliament to enact the decree into law.

The opposition, led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, responded with a full-fledged campaign against it, forcing Zardari to back down this week.

The agreement had granted more than 8,000 Government bureaucrats and politicians, including Zardari and many others from his party, immunity from a host of corruption and criminal charges. (ANI)

Few people think that Asif Ali Zardari is president on his own right. Well, he contested election and won by overwhelming majority. So it is totally unfair to malign President of Pakistan on the basis of perception and without realizing ground realities. If one looks at the history of President’s in Pakistan, Zardari will stand out as the most significant name in the list. Now if we look few channels and non-beard parties are really running for mid-term elections and paving their way to step in, so they are leading propaganda against President Zardari on bases of NRO. While corruption is so widespread and all politicians and senior civil servants and businessmen have been accused of it, why Zardari has been more accused of the same thing that the accusers have done themselves in possibly bigger ways? The accusations against Nawaz Sharif are more fundamental. Accusations against General Musharaf and other military rulers of Pakistan are even more evident but why Zardari has been vilified so much? This all negative and part of malicious campaign against democratic government.
