Haryana seeks central intervention in river projects

Chandigarh, Nov 21 (IANS) Haryana Saturday sought the intervention of the central government in river projects and urged Union Water Resource Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal to take up the issue.

Haryana Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav met Bansal in New Delhi Saturday and asked him to take up the issue of Termination of Agreements Act and of early construction of Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, a state spokesperson said here.

‘We have appealed to Bansal to take up the matter of presidential reference made to the Supreme Court regarding the Termination of Agreements Act and to expedite the construction of SYL canal,’ the spokesperson said.

He added: ‘During the meeting, Yadav also raised the issue of Shahpur Kandi dam project which has been declared a national project by government of India. Bansal has assured that he would ensure that Punjab complies with the conditions, laid down by the planning commission.’

Bansal had also assured Haryana government that he would try to get the work expedited on all the three dams on river Yamuna.

‘Yadav had requested Bansal to intervene in the matter regarding the BML-Hansi Butana multi-purpose link canal. Haryana is ready to hand over the control of head regulator of this canal to Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) so that water shares of Punjab and Rajasthan are ensured,’ stated the spokesperson.
