Kochi doctors remove largest uterus of world

Kochi, Oct 28 (ANI): A team of doctors from Kochi claimed that they had surgically removed the largest uterus of world. Weighing 4.9 kg, the uterus was removed from a 46-year-old woman.

Five surgeons of the Sunrise Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) led by doctor Hafeez Rehman removed the uterus by less-invasive laparoscopic keyhole surgery in record 28 minutes.

As per the hospital officials, the uterus is believed to be the world’s biggest one operated upon compared against previous record of 3.2 kilogram which is already listed in the Guinness Book of Record.

Dr. Rehman said that the best part about the surgery was that there was no blood loss.

“We could achieve this removal of this large mass which is weighing around 4.9 kg with just 28 minutes. I feel that is the great achievement and the best part of it was that there was absolutely no blood loss. Usually when surgeons remove this size of very large uterus, blood bottles are arranged because there is huge blood loss in these kinds of surgeries,” said Dr. Rehman, chairman and head of the Gynaecology Department.

Dr. Rehman explained that woman’s tumour itself resembled a full term pregnancy of about 36 weeks and had a case of fibroid, a non-cancerous tumour of the uterus.

The doctors conducted operation on September 29, through a process called ‘Laparoscopic Hysterectomy’.

Dr. Rehman further said that such surgery is a benefit to the humanity and women need not fear anymore.

“Those who are having very large uteruses, they really need not have any fear that they need to open up their abdomen and suffer all the pain and hardships after that. All these tumours can be successfully removed by Laparoscopy through one-centimetre keyhole incision,” he added.

Hospital officials claimed that they have created a world record and have decided to send the details of the surgery for entry into the Guinness book of World Records.

The lady, who underwent the surgery, a bank worker in Kochi, is normal now and was discharged from the hospital soon after the operation. By Juhan Samuel(ANI)
