Chandigarh, Nov 25 (IANS) Do not mess with the mother – it is wisely said. A lawyer got thrashed by his client’s angry mother at the Punjab and Haryana High Court complex here Wednesday and when other advocates came to his rescue they too were beaten up by other family members. And then it was free for all.

Monica and Kunal Mahajan, residents of Panipat town in Haryana, had married against the wishes of their family members Nov 6. Sensing a threat from their families, they filed a petition in the high court here seeking protection.

Before the court hearing Wednesday, the couple’s lawyer Sanjeev Sharma tried to stop Monica’s mother from talking to her, which infuriated the lady and she started beating Sharma with her sandals.

Things went out of control when some youngsters and relatives accompanying the girl’s parents also got involved and thrashed the couple and their lawyer. They did not even spare other lawyers who tried to intervene.

Following this, scores of lawyers gathered at the spot. In the meantime, security personnel took the girl’s family to the security room to save them from the wrath of angry lawyers.

Lawyers also surrounded the security room and tried to break its glass wall to gain entry. Seeing this, personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, who were stationed in the high court, came forward and controlled the situation.

Furious lawyers also indulged in heated arguments with some mediapersons who tried to record these happenings. They also damaged the camera of a news channel.

In the meantime, police reached the spot but all their efforts to pacify the lawyers went in vain. Lawyers threatened to go on strike if a case was not registered against the girl’s family.

However, during the hearing, the judge advised both the parties to reach an amicable solution.

‘We have not registered any case so far. We are still looking into the matter,’ Har Sahai Sharma, station house officer of Sector-3 police station, told IANS late Wednesday evening.
