Man caught with revolver at Kanpur stadium ahead of India, Sri Lanka Test

Kanpur, Nov 21 (IANS) Hours before the Indian and Sri Lankan cricket teams arrived here Saturday for their second Test starting Nov 24, a man carrying a revolver managed to enter the stadium premises, police said.

The man, who claimed to be a journalist, was detained Saturday evening after some mediapersons spotted him roaming inside the Green Park Stadium and informed the police.

Despite the heavy deployment of the police personnel at the stadium, some 90 km from Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow, none appeared to have noticed the man with the revolver tucked in his trousers.

When contacted, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Kanpur) B.P. Jogdand told IANS: ‘We are inquiring into how the man managed to enter the stadium.’

‘The man, who is in his early 40s, is being interrogated. As of now I can only say he is not related to any terror outfit,’ he added.

Meanwhile, the two teams arrived at the Amausi airport in Lucknow amid tight security arrangements and left for Kanpur in a bus.
