New ‘Sugardrop’ tomato is ‘as sweet as a peach’
London, Nov 24 (ANI): For people, who find the taste of ordinary tomatoes too sharp, a new type of tomato described ‘as sweet as a peach’ might taste appealing.
The new type of tomato is called the ‘Sugardrop’ and said to be as sweet as a peach and is a hybrid of two tomato varieties. It has gone on sale in Tesco from today.
It has been created after two years of trails involving 3,000 different tomato types.
“A few years ago we sat down with our suppliers and asked them to find us a high quality tomato that would appeal to gourmets with a sweet tooth,” the Telegraph quoted Ashleigh McWilliams, Tesco tomato buyer, as saying.
“It was the beginning of major research that involved our growers contacting all the major seed houses in the world in order to find varieties that they could cross pollinate to find a tomato with higher than normal sugar levels.
“The result is the Sugardrop which is the sweetest tomato there has ever been and now this week UK shoppers will be the first to try it,” McWilliams added. (ANI)
