Police to help in development works in Chhattisgarh district
Raipur, Nov 25 (IANS) Police and paramilitary troopers will help authorities in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district to carry out development works in Maoist dominated areas where infrastructure projects have been held up, officials said Wednesday.
District Collector of Kanker Avinash Champavat held a meeting with police officers and Lok Sabha member Sohan Potai and local legislator Sumitra Markole at Kanker town, some 125 km from here, on Wednesday and decided to involve police and paramilitary forces in infrastructure projects in Maoists-dominated interior region.
‘We decided at the meeting that police and paramilitary forces will work in tandem with local authorities to ensure that road projects and several other infrastructure works being held up for years due to fear of Maoists in Kanker district’s interiors be completed,’ Champavat told reporters.
Officials say that projects worth millions of rupees, mainly road construction works under the Prime Minister’s Rural Roads Scheme were being held up in the district due to the fear of Maoists as the rebels had set ablaze dozens of vehicles engaged in construction work and threatened to kill contractors.
