Soon, spray-on skin that heals burns in days

Melbourne, November 23 (ANI): A clinical trial of spray-on skin that heals burns in days is set to begin in the US in December.

Dr James Holmes of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, will be running the trial of Avita Medical’s ReCell technology.

ReCell uses a postage stamp-sized piece of skin from a patient to restore a page’s-worth of burned skin, cutting down the risk of deadly infections, reports ABC Science.

John Geisel, a scientist at Avita Medical developing the technology, said: “We need to get these burn wounds closed quickly. Until we do, these wounds lose blood and a patient runs the risk of a life-threatening infection.”

The technique stems from the study conducted by Professor Fiona Wood and Marie Stoner of the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia.

Holmes added: “What’s available today is the same technology that was available 30 years ago.

“In a burn you are always working against time. ReCell will allow us to turn back the clock on all kinds of burns.” (ANI)
