Southwest monsoon pattern changing in India
New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS) If you felt more heat and humidity during last monsoon, here is the reason – the southwest monsoon, significantly responsible for rains in the country, has lost intensity and become more unpredictable.
Minister of Earth Sciences Prithviraj Chavan told the Lok Sabha Wednesday that the research studies carried out so far at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, indicate that the southwest monsoon rainfall over the country has decreased by nearly 4.7 percent.
‘Further, a significant increasing trend in the frequency and magnitude of high rainfall events (greater than 10 cm/day) and a significant decreasing trend in the frequency of moderate events have been noticed,’ Chavan added.
The minister said that continuous research and development efforts are under way to comprehensively understand the causes for the changes in the southwest monsoon and to improve the rain forecast.
